Tanzanian witchdoctors step in as demons ‘invade’ Mombasa village

Five witchdoctors stormed Mombasa’s Kiembeni area on Sunday to exorcise demons from Roma village, which residents believe was cursed.

The witchdoctors from Tanzania, led by Abdalla Mshiiri alias Dr Kibunga, stripped naked and sang spiritual songs as they dug out materials allegedly associated with witchcraft.

Several elderly residents fled in fear of being victimised and killed over misfortunes facing residents.

They were accused of casting a spell that has reportedly led to incurable diseases and the unemployement of youths, who have been termed confused, despite being educated.

In the area in May 2013, a cat whose head had been caught in a jerrican was not freed as residents believed it was a demon.

The cat was rescued by the KSPCA four days later, but residents believed the death of a man following the incident was a strange twist.
