A Kenyan man in Plano, Texas was last monthsentenced to 33 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $480,643 in restitution for his role in a stolen identify tax fraud scheme.
Benjamin Kinyua pleaded guilty to one count of theft of federal funds and aiding and abetting. Federal prosecutors say that from 2012 through May 17, 2013, Kinyua “regularly acquired and then chased U.S. Treasury check, as well as third-party tax refundchecks that he knew had either been stolen or obtained by fraud,” according to Plano Star Courier.
Between February, 2013 and May 17, 2013, prosecutors say Kinyua presented 16 checks worth $595,901 to undercover IRS agents posing as persons willing to pay cash for stolen tax refunds.
Another Kenyan, Thomas Nganga Muya, is already serving a 27-month sentence in federal prison inconnection with the same case.
