A Former director at Sheppard Pratt Health Systems and her husband were sentenced to federal prison time and ordered to pay $2.7 million restitution for a billing scam, prosecutors said.
U.S. District Judge James K. Bredar sentenced Lyneth Nyabiosi, 50, the director of Sheppard Pratt’s health information management department, to 48 months in prison, while her husband, Willie Evans III, 54, was sentenced to 41 months.
Both previously pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit mail fraud, related to a scheme in which they used a company they controlled to submit more than 180 false invoices to Sheppard Pratt. Nyabiosi managed medical records for Sheppard Pratt, and with Evans operated an entity called Information Management Solutions Technology that was designed to appear as an independent contractor, prosecutors said.
Evans signed paperwork for IMST and represented the company to attorneys using the name “James Davies,” to shield Nyabiosi’s conflict of interest. The couple billed Sheppard Pratt for work that was never performed or “excessively inflated” amounts for work that was performed, prosecutors said. For example, IMST said it had picked up 500,000 boxes of patient records when it had actually picked up about 3,000 boxes.
