DALLAS – The City of Dallas is suing an East Dallas auto repairman for refusing to move his business.
The lawsuit, filed Tuesday, is seeking fines up to $1,000 for every day Hinga Mbogo, 62, has worked out of his shop on Ross Avenue without a proper permit.
In 2005 the City rezoned the area, forcing out auto repair shops from one stretch of Ross. Neighbors say the move was to try and make Ross a gateway to the Downtown Arts District.
Mbogo’s permit expired last August, which could mean thousands of dollars in back fines.
In April the Dallas City Council denied a special use permit to Mbogo. He was fighting to keep Hinga Auto Repair open for another two years.
“I just want to live the American dream,” Mbogo told News 8 in April during a rally. “I want to own a property there. I want to decide what I can do with it.”
Hinga opened his shop in 1985.
