
John Magufuli will take over tomorrow as chairman of Chama Cha Mapinduzi, Tanzania’s ruling party since its foundation 39 years ago, from his presidential predecessor, Jakaya Kiwete. Some think the coronation could prove to be Mr Magufuli’s Achilles heel: the populist ruler has never been one for party politics; his choice as CCM’s candidate for the presidency last year was a surprise.
