A section of Kenyans on Twitter on Wednesday took to the platform to castigate the United States embassy in Nairobi over what they termed as "double standards" by the embassy following the embassy's stand on last week's general elections.
The consulate posted a message on its Twitter handle condemning the recent attacks on civil societies by the state, and soon later Kenyans responded to express their outrage.
"A free civil society is critical to democracy and fulfilling the promise of Kenya's constitution. US urges the government to protect their rights," the consulate said.
Twitter users would hear none of it, with most of them terming the consulate's message flat and almost an endorsement of efforts to suppress free speech and limit the democratic space by the state.
The fact that the embassy had earlier called on those aggrieved by the presidential election outcome to seek legal redress seemed to add more salt on the injury. Here are some of the reactions:
Gerald Lepariyo, "How comes you didn't speak about credibility of results transmissions? Stop double standards."
Popular blogger Robert Alai said, "Yawa US Embassy. Stop being vague. Be blunt."
"Both the US embassy and the US president have endorsed the regime. It's too early to start faulting it again," another user said.
"Would you wish for government to protect the sanctity of citizens' votes rather than endorse subversion by statutory forms being cooked?"
"You shouldn't mince words. This behaviour by the government cannot and should not be tolerated. That one should be clear in your statements."
