Former United States Secretary of State John Kerry has said that the the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC)  has put in a voting system “appears to be very, very strong.”
The former Secretary of State, who is in Kenya as Chief Election Observer for The Carter Center, said that view of the observer groups in the country is that the IEBC has a system that provides redundancy, providing for the ballots to be secured and to be counted.
He was speaking to reporters when he stopped at the IEBC tallying center at Bomas of Kenya.
National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential Raila Odinga has dismissed the provisional results showing him leading incumbent president Uhuru Kenyatta by close to 1.4 million votes, saying the IEBC system had been hacked and was not displaying correct vote results. In a press briefing on Wednesday, Raila provided what he said were logs from the IEBC server hosting the voting data indicating the system had been hacked. IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba dismissed those claims, saying there is no eveidence that the system had been hacked.
With 97% of the provisional ballots reported, Uhuru Kenyatta leads has a commanding lead with 8,024,704 votes (54.3%) while Raila Odinga has 6,628,006 (44.8%) votes.
The IEBC on Wednesday announced it will compare all Forms 34A and Forms 34B with the results submitted electronically before declaring a winner.
Former South African President Thabo Mbeki on Wednesday also said the IEBC “has discharged its responsibilities according to law and regulations” and said the elections should so far be considered be everyone to be free and fair. Mbeki is leading the African Union (AU) Observers in the country.
