The Government of Kenya has reacted to United States President Donald Trump's 'shithole" remarks about African countries, Haiti and El Salvador.
Government spokesman Kiarithe appeared to defend Trump, stating that the attacks not directed at Kenya and therefore have no significance to Kenyans.
“The statement was not an official matter that say is related to the relationship with the government. We enjoy a cordial relationship,” he told a press briefing in Nairobi on Thursday.
He went on: “We are studying the context in which these statements were made and see whether it is worth the attention.”
His reaction, however, differs with that of African Union, which has demanded the US President to withdraw and apologize, saying the remarks were racists.
“The African Union Commission is frankly alarmed at statements by the President of the United States when referring to migrants of African countries and others in such contemptuous terms,” AU chairperson Moussa Faki, last week said through his spokesperson Ebba Kalondo.
“Considering the historical reality of how many Africans arrived in the US during the Atlantic slave trade, this flies in the face of all accepted behaviour and practice,” said Faki.
