Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested 19 Nigerians in Nairobi over online fraud targeting Kenyans.
In a statement, the DCI said the fraudsters begin by befriending Kenyans on social media network, Facebook and initiating a friendly chat. They then promise to send victims ‘goodies’ at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) through DHL courier company.
Afterwards, someone masquerading as a DHL official calls the victims asking for clearance fees for the parcel they claim to have sent.
Once the victim sends the cash through Mpesa, another call is made asking for some more money for other documentation and taxes. After all the payments are made, they go missing and calls to the alleged office go unanswered.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has cautioned Kenyans not to fall victims to such fraudsters. The foreigners arrested are currently in police custody and will be charged with electronic fraud on Monday.
