Police in Nairobi have arrested a Kenyan and two Chad nationals with fake US dollars and Euros estimated to be worth Sh1 billion.
The three were arrested with the fake notes when detectives raided an apartment located on Brookside Drive, Westlands estate in Nairobi. The officers said the fake notes were in heaps of the two currencies.
The raid was part of the ongoing crackdown on undocumented immigrants and illegal workers in the country, which is being conducted by a multi-agency team.
The three were identified as Abdoulaye Tamba and Abdalla Tamba from Chad, and a Kenyan, Anthony Mwangangi, who was their driver. Another man who was part of the group managed to escape and police are still looking for him.
"Detectives today afternoon arrested three men namely AbdoulayeTamba, AbdallaTamba (both nationals of Chad)& Anthony Mwangangi, a Kenyan, who is their driver following a tip-off from members of public. The three were found with over a billion fake currency," the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said in a tweet.
The DCI added: "The three men were arrested in an apartment within Nairobi by the #Flyingsquad officers who also managed to recover the fake currency which was in dollars and Euros."
