Kenyan Nurse Crushed By an Elevator at JPS Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, Suffers Severe Brain Damage

A Kenyan nurse in Fort Worth, Texas remains hospitalized with severe injuries and was in a coma for 15 days after she was crushed by an elevator on January 20th at John Peter Smith (JPS) Hospital where she works.
Carren Nyasuguta Stratford was stepping onto the elevator when it started moving before she was completely inside the elevator.
“She put that right foot in that elevator and as she did that, the elevator continues to go up, knocked her off balance and caused her to have that elevator continue to rise and crushed her on that elevator,” said Robert Earley, President and CEO of JPS Hospital.
Carren suffered hypoxic brain damage and multiple internal injuries, causing her to be in a coma for 15 days and still in and out of consciousness, her attorney, Frank Branson, said at a news conference on Friday.
Carren, 56 and a mother of two adult children, has worked at the hospital for the last two and a half years and was planning to enroll for a masters degree in nursing - plans she will have to now have to put off, her lawyer says.
JPS Hospital CEO Early has said the elevator company - Thyssenkrup Elevator - was unresponsive for eight days after the incident despite calls from the hospital, and faces a possible lawsuit. "We are not elevator experts. You hire elevator experts, and we thought we had elevator experts. We've got a contract that clearly spells out what elevator companies are supposed to do to help with safety and security of everyone that works here,” said Early on Friday.
