President Uhuru Commissions Africa’s Largest Wind Power Farm in Turkana

President Kenyatta on Friday commissioned Africa’s largest wind power farm in Loiyangalani, Turkana County.
Dubbed Lake Turkana Wind Power farm, the plant has an installed capacity of 310 megawatts of clean, reliable and low-cost electricity.
The wind power project has reduced the usage of the expensive diesel-generated thermal power, saving the country more than Sh8 billion in the last eight months. The plant injected over 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours (KWh) of electricity over the same period.
President Kenyatta said the commissioning of the project was a proud moment for Kenya. “With this monumental feat, as Kenya scores another first in Africa, I challenge all Kenyans to remain, resilient builders who build best when called upon to build greatly,” said Kenyatta.
Kenyatta said the government will continue to encourage both Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) and the private sector to develop wind farms and other renewable green sources of electricity.
“The successful implementation of Lake Turkana Wind Power demonstrates Kenya’s outstanding credentials as an investment destination in Africa and is a perfect example of the immense potential of the public-private partnership model of implementing development projects,” said Kenyatta
