Kenyan Student Studying at University of Leeds in the UK Gunned Down By Police in Nairobi

A 23-year-old Kenyan student studying at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom has been gunned down in Nairobi.
Carilton David Maina was allegedly shot dead by police officers in Line Saba area, Kibra Estate on Sunday morning.
Carilton scored an A plain from Maseno School and his love for football earned him a scholarship to the UK university to pursue his academic and soccer dream.
Maina, who was taking a course in electronic and communication engineering at the University of Leeds, was on a long holiday and had returned to the country to visit his family.
"Carliton had just come for the December holidays then go back to the UK in January. If not for his life being ended by a bullet from rogue police. Carilton had just come from watching a football match at the nearest movie shop, being a fanatic football fan and as a matter of fact a goalkeeper for his local side FC Interdjinamory from Kenyatta Hospital Estate," a resident, Collins Onyango says.
However, Kilimani OCPD Michael Muchiri says the victim was part of a gang that has been terrorizing residents.
"The police received a call from the members of the public who said that they were being mugged by a group of youths. It is then that the police acted and shot one on the spot," says Muchiri.
Speaking to Citizen TV, Maina’s mother says his son had come to visit her and discuss his academics as he had stayed longer than expected.
Reports indicate that a police officer went ahead to shoot dead Maina despite surrendering. His family and residents are seeking justice for their son over what they say is another case of extra-judicial killing.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has constituted a team to investigate the incident.
