Detectives from the KBS have shut down five water firms in Mombasa for selling counterfeit water and urged caution after several cases of hepatitis in the region.
The officers from the Kenya Bureau of Standards closed the brands Bamba (Nyali), Zeit (Kisauni), Zahra Cool (Ganjoni), Sundus (Majengo) and Active (Bombolulu).
The surveillance department said samples were found to contain coliform bacteria – a confirmation of faecal contamination and poor hygiene standards.
Regional Kebs boss Martin Nyakiomo said the water from the firms was dangerous for human beings.
“This was a disaster in waiting. No proper hygiene measures were followed and since many people have been diagnosed with hepatitis, we are not going to surrender until we win this war,” he said
An arresting officer who did not want to be named said the companies did not meet KS EAS153 standard specifications for drinking water.
“We are trailing other suspects from Changamwe, Likoni and Ukunda. They have also been avoiding to pay axes,” the officer said.
Residents were advised to only buy properly sealed water.
In Narok, a public health official pounced on a bus on Friday for stopping and letting passengers defecate in bushes along Bomet-Narok Highway.
Daniel Sironka, Narok public health director, said members of the public have made several complaints about the menace.
Sironka said this type of environmental pollution presents fertile ground for the outbreak of cholera and other waterborne diseases. He noted that rain carries the waste to water sources.
The Kenya Revenue Authority said earlier this month that 60 per cent water and juice on the Kenyan market is counterfeit.
