China funding multibillion-dollar railway in Kenya
May 30 (UPI) -- A 300-mile China-funded railroad connecting the Kenyan capital of Nairobi to Mombasa, the country's largest port city, is set to launch Wednesday. The railroad, built with a $3.5 billion loan from Beijing to Kenya, is being met with skepticism in Kenya, where The Standard, a local newspaper, said the project would "tighten China's grip on the Kenyan economy." China is promoting the railroad as a major infrastructure development that could bolster modernization in East Africa, according to Beijing's state news agency Xinhua. "The launch of the standard gauge railway will undoubtedly contribute to Kenya's economic and social development as well as improve people's livelihoods and ...

Tanzania's Opposition Party Endorses President Uhuru, Says Raila a Traitor
Tanzania's Opposition Party Endorses President Uhuru, Says Raila a Traitor
Tanzania's opposition party Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) has endorsed president Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election bid, branding National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga as a traitor.
Speaking at the party's council meeting over the weekend, Chadema’s chairman Freeman Mbowe said that the party had unanimously resolved to back President Kenyatta’s re-election in the August general elections.
He said that the party’s assessment was that President Kenyatta is a better choice for democracy in Kenya and is the right candidate for the presidency.
The party accused Raila Odinga of betraying them by supporting their rival in the 2015 general elections, even after they supported his bid in the 2007 elections. “We supported Odinga during the 2013 elections in Kenya but to our surprise, when it came to the 2015 polls in Tanzania, he supported the CCM candidate, John Magufuli. Odinga is a traitor,’’ said Mbowe.
The endorsement by Chadema brings a new twist to the upcoming contest after the National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale earlier claimed that Odinga was setting up a tallying center in Tanzania with the help of Magufuli’s government.
Chadema presidential candidate Edward Lowassa lost in the race for the top job in 2015 President, John Pombe Magufuli.
Kumail Nanjiani Tells Grads To ‘Have Sex With An Immigrant’
Immigrants may feel a little tense about what’s happening in American these days, but comedian Kumail Nanjiani has a plan to make things feel a little more relaxing for everyone.
“Have sex with an immigrant,” Nanjiani told the graduates of Grinnell College in Iowa during a commencement speech. “We’re going through a tough time right now, and it would just be really great for morale.”
Nanjiani graduated from the liberal arts school in 2001. Grinnell invited him back this week to deliver the commencement address to the graduating class of 2017. During the ceremony, the school awarded Nanjiani an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
The star of HBO’s “Silicon Valley” opened up to the graduates about his experience moving from Pakistan to Iowa for college and how it shaped the way he moved through the world.
“When I came to Grinnell I was a devout Muslim who had never romantically touched a girl and I was going to get a degree that guaranteed me a job,” Nanjiani said. “By the time I graduated I was basically a Rastafarian with a white American girlfriend and a philosophy degree. College changes you, is my point.”
He also offered advice on how to take on bigotry, even if it is uncomfortable.
“We cannot expect others to understand our point of view if we don’t understand theirs,” he said. “It’s uncomfortable and awkward and infuriating and it hurts your brain, but with that pain can come growth and real change.”
“Being a fish out of water is tough, but that’s how you evolve,” he added. “I think that’s scientifically accurate — I don’t know, I had a liberal arts education.”
Nanjiani advised the graduates to live with intention and not fear failure ― unless, he joked, you’re the person who created the exploding Samsung Galaxy phones.
“I never thought big picture,” Nanjiani said. “That would have overwhelming. So what I’m saying is, you can go slow. Allow your dreams and goals to change, but live an intentional life.”
He continued: “Here’s the big secret I’ve learned in the last few years: Nobody knows what they’re doing ... Everybody’s winging it out there. Some people are just better at pretending to be confident because nobody’s done ― nobody’s cooked.”

Trump's Travel Ban 'Hurts' US Visa Issuance
Trump's Travel Ban 'Hurts' US Visa Issuance
Effects of the US President Donald Trump’s travel ban seven countries have started being felt after the United States issued about 50 per cent fewer visitors with visas in April to citizens of seven countries named in President Donald Trump's temporary travel ban.
The US issued fewer visas than it did in an average month last year, according to a Reuter’s scrutiny on preliminary government data released on Thursday.
The total number of US non-immigrant visas issuance to people from all nations dropped by 15 percent in April compared with the monthly average in 2016.
The April data indicated the persistence of a trend identified in data for the month of March, which the State Department released last month.
According to the data, citizens from the seven Muslim-majority countries, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – were issued with about 40 percent fewer visitor visas in March than in an average month last year despite the Trump's travel bans being blocked by the courts.
About 2,800 citizens from the seven countries were issued with non-immigrant visas in April 2017, compared with about 5,700 on average per month in 2016 and more than 6,000 on average per month in 2015 and 2014.
The State Department released the statistics to obey with an order from Trump, asking it to publish monthly reports of the number of visas issued around the world.

Burundi President to Force Unmarried Couples to Wed in Bid to 'Reform Morals'
Burundi President to Force Unmarried Couples to Wed in Bid to 'Reform Morals'
The Burundi Government has given all unmarried couples an ultimatum to legalize their relationships as part of an effort to reform morals in the country.
A statement from the government released on Wednesday told the unmarried couples that they have until the end of the year to formalize their affair, failure to which they will face the hand of the law.
The order comes after President Pierre Nkurunziza launched a campaign this month “to moralize society” in the tiny nation that has been marred with violent political upheavals in the last two years.
According to Interior ministry spokesman Terence Ntahiraja, the country is facing a population explosion which he blamed on “illegal marriages”, polygamy, bigamy and “hundreds of schoolgirls getting pregnant”.
The government has been pressuring unmarried couples across the country to tie the knot, to restore ‘morals’. “Persons living in common-law unions should be put on a special list by 22 June,” The governor of the southeastern province of Rutana ordered.
Northwestern governor of Bubanza province on the other hand demanded unspecified “sanctions” against aisle-dodgers.
Pierre, a 27-year-old farmer living with his partner in Ngozi in the northern Burundi, told the media that local officials had threatened to charge him a 50,000 Burundian franc ($29) fine, and any child born out of wedlock would not be eligible for free education and medical costs.
“She told me she was pregnant. As I am poor, we decided to come together to raise our child,” he said. “We thought we would legalize our union as soon as we could afford it.” He said.
It is said that Burundi government officials have started organizing mass weddings, a move civil society opposes as “a violation of human rights because the state has no right to attack two adults who have decided to live together without being married.” But Government Spokesman Ntahiraja dismissed such arguments saying the government’s campaign was within the law.
“We want Burundians to understand that everyone is responsible for his life, we want order in this country,” he said.
“All this is done within the framework of the patriotic training programme,” he added, referring to an initiative launched by Nkurunziza in August 2013 to reinforce “positive traditional values.”

Google Selects Kenyan Tech Firm for Mentorship
Google has selected Kenya Database Management System (DMS) as one of the six Sub-Saharan Africa IT startups for mentorship of the firm’s Launchpad Accelerator program.
DMS seeks to distribute tech enabled platform to millions of small and medium sized food and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) retailers in Africa’s urban markets to replace informal wholesale markets.
According to Google’s SSA developer relations programs manager John Kimani, homegrown mobile web products were the way to go since Kenyans was best placed to address her own challenges by framing the right mobile apps that they are willing to pay a small fee to use in solving problems.
“Africa’s ICT infrastructure is on the rise and it is encouraging to see Kenyan youth taking up such an opportunity that will expose them to a like-minded elite community of startups around the world,” said Kimani.
Delivery Science, Gidi Mobile Limited and Paystack are the three startups started in Nigeria, while South Africa has two; Flatterwave and Jumo.
Google will facilitate a two-week all-expenses paid trip to kick-off training at the new Google Developers Launchpad Space in San Francisco, USA.
Google further promised it will provide the startups with accomplished mentors to prepare products for the market as well as nurture the owners’ skills on up scaling products.
“The startups also get access to free credits for Google products and marketing (spotlight) opportunities as well as equity-free funding during the course of the six-month program,” said Kimani.
Launchpad Accelerator was launched in 2015 and it seeks to support mobile apps development in specific countries where platforms are used to solve known problems with users willing to pay a small fee to access the solution.

US President Donald Trump Proposes Reduction of Assistance to Kenya
US President Donald Trump Proposes Reduction of Assistance to Kenya
Kenya has been dealt a financial blow after the United States President Donald Trump proposed a cut in development assistance to Kenya by Sh7 billion as he endeavors to fulfill his campaign pledges of cutting out on foreign aid.
In Trump’s first Budget, submitted to Congress on Tuesday, there has been serious reduction of foreign aid in general while allocating more funds in boosting defense and security programs.
The new budget proposes a total allocation of $639.35 million (Sh64 billion) to Kenya, down from $710.53 million (Sh71 billion) last year.
Trump proposes that the aid funds to Kenya should be channeled to economic support worth $83 million (Sh8.3 billion), counter-terrorism ($14 million, Sh1.4 billion), peace and reconciliation ($2 million, Sh200 million) and private sector ($8 million, Sh800 million).
Further, Washington would continue funding political and governance programs at $10 million (Sh1 billion) and health and education ($15 million, Sh1.5 billion) in 2018.
Military and defense training aid to Kenya will be reduced, as the budget proposed to spend $850,000 (Sh85 million), from $924,000 (Sh92 million).
United States last year allocated a funding of $800,000 (Sh80 million) to health in Kenya, a category that has been omitted in Trump’s budget proposal.
However, further $8 million (Sh800 million) has been proposed to Kenya through USAid, which is still lower than last year’s $31.7 million (Sh3.2 billion).

Pope Francis Cracks Joke on US President Donald Trump's Body Size
Pope Francis Cracks Joke on US President Donald Trump's Body Size
When President Donald Trump was seeking election to succeed President Barrack Obama as the United States president, one of the campaign promises was to build a wall along the US, Mexico border, to curb the illegal migration of Mexicans into the United States, a promise that did not go well with Catholic leader, Pope Francis.
According to the Pontiff, ‘ it was awkward to build walls instead of bridges’ in reference to Trump’s campaign promise.
In response, Donald Trump described the Pope’s comments as disgraceful, and accused the pontiff of being a pawn of the Mexican government.
For this, it was easy to predict that ‘bad blood’ arose from the heated exchange between the two powerful world leaders.
Fast forward months down the line, their differences proved to be a thing of the past when the two met on Wednesday in Rome, Italy during President Trump’s first foreign trip.
The world’s most popular and powerful religious leader would make a joke that seemed to have gone down well with the world’s most powerful political leader, Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump.
In one of the lighter moments when the two met at the Vatican on Wednesday, the Pontiff made an apparent allusion to Trump's imposing physical dominance, leaving Trump and Melania in laughter.
"What do you feed him on? Potica?" Francis asked Melania, in a reference to a calorie-laden cake that comes from her native Slovenia and is pronounced "potteezza".
There were reports that the US First Lady had replied "Pizza!" , but her staff later told AFP that she appreciated Francis for producing a custom-made joke for her benefit.
