Hope for Immigrants: US is Giving $10 Million to Help Legal Residents Become Citizens

There is some hope for immigrants in the United States after all.
Despite a new set of guidelines and procedures that tighten U.S. immigration policies and expand the possibility of deportations of legal residents, the U.S. government is offering to help lawful permanent residents who apply for citizenship.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced this week it will use funds collected through fees paid to the service to subsidize citizenship preparation programs across the country under the Citizenship and Assimilation Grant Program.
The up to $10 million in grants is a significant sum for the pro-immigrant organizations, which usually have limited resources to help low-income foreigners become U.S. citizens.
“These competitive grant opportunities are for organizations that prepare lawful permanent residents for naturalization and promote civic assimilation through increased knowledge of English, U.S. history and civics,” the USCIS announcement said.
The program’s goal is to promote the availability of high quality citizenship preparation services, said the agency. An immigrant is generally eligible for citizenship through naturalization if he or she has been a permanent resident for at least five years and meets all other eligibility requirements.
The USCIS grants fall into two categories:
▪ Citizenship Instruction and Naturalization Application Services: In this category, the funds will be distributed to 36 organizations that help permanent legal residents with citizenship education and services for their application for naturalization. The education includes English language, U.S. history and civics portions of the naturalization test.
▪ The Refugee and Asylee Assimilation Program: This category will fund up to four organizations that help permanent residents who entered the country under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program or were granted asylum. They must teach skills and knowledge needed to acquire citizenship, and promote a sense of belonging in the United States.
The deadlines for the grant’s application are Aug. 8 and 15, respectively.
USCIS officials will decide which groups will be awarded the grants based on various factors, “including past grantee performance and whether an applicant and any sub-awardees are enrolled in E-Verify,” the agency added.
Organizations interested in applying for a chunk of the $10 million can do so at grants.gov.
More information is available on the program’swebsite. USCIS will announce those selected for the funding in September.

Kenya Airways Acquires World's Fastest Passenger Jet

Kenya Airways has acquired the 'world's fastest and most efficient' passenger jet, Embraer E190-E2 from Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer S.A.
The latest acquisition adds to KQ's existing fleet of Embraer 190, making it the largest E190 operator in Africa. Embraer E190-E2 is an improvement of E-190 jet and was first launched during the Paris Air Show in 2013.
Speaking during the Embraer demo and static display ceremony in Nairobi on Thursday, Embraer’s Vice President for Sales and Marketing Africa and Middle East Raul Villaron said the jet is the fastest and the most efficient passenger jet in the world.
“The debut of the E190-E2 in Nairobi, is a epoch-making moment in our long term and successful relationship with Kenya Airways. It cuts fuel burn by more than 17 per cent and is the quickest passenger jet in the world today, both inside the cabin and out delivering significant cost efficiencies for airlines and an improved passenger,” he stated.
The E190 will offer state of the art in-flight entertainment technology besides the improved comfort with more shoulder room. It has a capacity of 98 to 106.
“We have had good commercial ties with Embraer, since we acquired our first Embraer E190 In 2010. We have used these planes for the past eight years to boost our fleet and have been very useful in servicing new routes and frequencies in our growing Africa network,” Kenya Airways Chief Operating Officer, Jan de Vegt said.

"It's a Little Punishment": Chinese Gov't Explains Alleged Abuse of Kenyan SGR Workers

The Chinese government has come out to defend the alleged harassment and discrimination of Kenyan standard gauge railway (SGR) employees by their Chinese bosses.
Speaking in Nairobi, Chinese envoy to Kenya Sun Baohong admitted that there is conflict between Kenyan workers and their Chinese counterparts, but explained that some of the things taken as mistreatment is part of "Chinese culture."
“It's Kenyan and we are helping construct and empower Kenyans to operate system. Requires a lot of safety thus the comprehensive training within and in China which comes with discipline,” Baohong said.
"There were complaints of little communication from Chinese to Kenyans alongside isolated eating areas. It will take time for them to socialise and fully engage with one another because of cultural differences,” she added.
Baohong further noted that images showing Chinese punishing Kenyan workers through caning were misinterpreted.
"It is little punishment and part of team building which all Chinese including me do. Maybe, if it is found to be offensive to Kenyans then the company can change to another mode of exercise," Sun said, without explaining why Chinese workers were not being exposed to similar treatment.

Trump Top Official Woos Kenya to Award Sh300 Billion Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway Contract to US Firm

The head of the United States government agency that helps private businesses invest in developing countries is wooing Kenya to award the contract for construction of Sh300 billion Nairobi-Mombasa expressway to American engineering firm Bechtel.
Ray Washburne, the President and CEO of the US Overseas Private Investment Corporation (Opic) on Tuesday said Bechtel would “provide value for money” in the multi-million dollar project.
“Whether it’s transportation, digital networks, or value chain, reliable connectivity has the power to transform emerging market economies,” Mr Washburne, who arrived in Kenya over the weekend, said.
He added: “And, the American private sector has the ability to play a huge role in this growth by bringing critical investment, value, and American business practices.”
Washburne came to Kenya to explore investment opportunities for US private companies amid China's increasing influence in Africa.
His tour to Kenya is part of a six-nation trip in Africa as Opic, through the new Connect Africa initiative, plans to invest more than $1 billion in transportation, technology and value chains in the continent.
“Africa is a long-standing priority for Opic and accounts for about one-quarter of the agency's $23 billion global portfolio. With the new Connect Africa initiative, OPIC will focus on investments that will foster a more connected and prosperous future for Kenya and all of Africa,” said a statement from Opic
