Kenya Drops Plans to Withdraw from International Criminal Court

Kenya Drops Plans to Withdraw from International Criminal Court

Outgoing Attorney-General Githu Muigai now says that Kenya has no plans of withdrawing from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Speaking at Strathmore University, the State Chief Legal Advisor said the country will remain part of ICC, but insisted that the Hague-based court must have a more constructive engagement with the African continent.
This, Githu said, will help salvage the continent's soring relationship with the Netherlands- headquartered global court.
“Kenya sees the ICC as an institution that ought to be having a constructive engagement with Africa. We ought to have a conversation of equals where issues are resolved with no acrimony,” Prof Muigai said at Strathmore University in Nairobi.
Githu spoke when he presided over the opening of an international justice symposium, Justice for International and Transnational Organised Crimes, an event organised by the Strathmore University, the Wayamo Foundation, and the Africa Group for Justice and Accountability.
“It is important that Kenya never withdrew from ICC, and has no plans at the moment to withdraw,” he said.
Kenya has in the past threatened to withdraw from the court and had launched a continental push for a mass exit of African nations. President Kenyatta had in 2016 vowed that no Kenyan will ever be tried again at ICC.
The Head of State, alongside Deputy President William Ruto and five other Kenyans were facing charges related to the 2007/08 post-election violence, but the cases were all dropped at different times for lack of evidence to propel the cases to full trial.

Africa the "Shithole"! WhatAre American InvestorsDoing there?

Sat, 01/13/2018 - 14:44  868 views 14 comments

It is very sad that the US President and leader of the free world is turning not to be the President the free world expects due to his vulgarity, insults and total disrespect of those outside his political base.
Reality is that the people President Trump envisions as originating from “shitholes” or failing to return from their huts are productive, well-educated citizens who have contributed immensely to the economic development of the United States. Similarly, many Americans who have decided to do business in Africa are as well contributing immensely to the African continent.
The key fact to remember is that the world has become a global village; a global market that is solidly inter-twined to such an extent that what happens in America, Europe, Asia, Australia, or Africa has a direct impact to every other continent including the Americas. It is therefore naïve and silly for anyone to condescendingly label the other as either superior or inferior because we are all one.
In Kenya for instance, an American company is constructing the Nairobi to Mombasa dual carriage highway. Why are the Americans there? As you stroll Nairobi, you notice immense and significant American investments that Kenya has embraced with open arms. Hotels such as Sheraton, Radisson, Hilton, Best Western, Comfort and many others are doing business in Nairobi. Food chains such as Dominos Pizza, Subway, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and many others also have presence in Nairobi. Mega companies such as General Electric, Price-Waterhouse Coopers, KPMG, General Motors are as well doing business in Kenya.
Presence of Europeans and Americans in Africa is not exclusive to Kenya; you see the same story repeat itself in almost every African country. Yet, the devoid American mentality thinks Africa is a “Shithole”; and yet, we the citizens of the African countries embrace and welcome with open arms the Americans who have seen the light and decided Africa is a good place for them to settle. Why then would America not do the same for Africans who have seen the light and decided America is a great place for them to be?
Africa is the next frontier for development; countries running away from Asia due to the high cost of business are finding solace in Africa. So, no more insults; respect us for mutuality. The words we use on each other must be measured.

US Fast-Food Chain Hardee's to Open New Restaurant in Kenya

United States fast-food restaurant Hardee’s will in March open its third branch in Kenya. The new outlet will be located at Two Rivers Mall; its launch coming only a month after it unveiled its second outlet in the country, along Westlands Road.
Rohit Gambhir, the burger chain's general manager in Kenya said the new outlet will mainly target the large number of people shopping at the mall, while the Westlands branch taps workers of blue-chip companies located near the area.
The global fast-food brand opened its first outlet in Kenya at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in mid-2016. This was its first outlet in the Sub-saharan Africa. Gambhir said the three joints will employ about 60 people.
“Our expansion drive this year has been inspired greatly by the positive growth recorded by the firm over the time we have been in Kenya and the growing demand for our products and services. Giving quality and something refreshing to our customers is why we have been able to record growth,” said Gambhir, an ex- KFC executive.
Hardee’s has more than 3,800 franchised or company-operated outlets in 44 countries.
