President Kenyatta, Raila to Hold Joint Tour in Nyanza

President Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga will hold a joint tour to Nyanza region, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has said.
Speaking during a fundraiser at Sirembe Mixed Secondary School in Gem constituency, Wamalwa said the two will launch a water project in Siaya County, but did not disclose when it will happen.
The Sh2.1 billion water project is being undertaken by the national government in collaboration with African Development Bank (ADB). When complete, the project will supply over 190,000 residents with clean and safe water.
He hailed the handshake between the President and the ODM leader, noting that it will create a suitable environment needed for the country to realise development.
“We should not let anything divide us again. The unity of purpose is our course and should be our focus henceforth to bring prosperity to our country and move it forward. Things have changed and most development projects have kicked off,” he added.
“It is my wish as the CS in charge of devolution to see the golden handshake between the two leaders embraced even in counties. I am happy that the parliamentarians are already endorsed the code between former   Prime Minister Raila and President Uhuru,” said Wamalwa who was flanked by Kieni East MP Kanini Kega and former Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo.

Bill Chemirmir, a Kenyan Man in Dallas, Texas, Indicted on New Attempted Murder Charges

A Kenyan man in Dallas, Texas already charged with capital murder and attempted capital murder has been indicted by a grand jury in Collin County of a new attempted capital murder charge.
45-year-old Billy Chemirmir, a native of Kenya, faces new accusations of attempted murder in the case of a 93-year-old woman at the Parkview Elderly Assisted Living facility in Frisco, Texas.
Chemirmir is accused of knocking at the elderly woman’s apartment door at the living facility in October, 2017 posing as a maintenance worker. Frisco Police say Chemirmir asked the woman if she needed any work done, and when she said no, he forced his way into the apartment, shoved her off her walker, and put a pillow over her face to choke her. He then stole her jewelry, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.
“At the time of the offense, she had been able to tell us that she was attacked by a black male but could not give us enough information to, at that time, to find who that was,” said Frisco Police Chief John Bruce.
Chemirmir was initially arrested on March 20, 2018 and charged with theft as police who were surveilling him on suspected attempted capital murder and theft watched him throwing away a jewelry box into a dumpster outside his apartment complex. Police traced the stolen jewelry to 81-year-old Lu Thi Harris and on going to her home for a welfare check, they found her dead of apparent suffocation. They upgraded Chemirmir’s charges to include capital murder. He has been held at the Dallas County jail since then on $1 million bail.
Chemirmir previously worked as a home health aide, and authorities suspect he may be involved in many other unresolved murders of elderly people in the Dallas area.

Kenyans in the Diaspora Send Home a Record Sh64.3 Billion in 3 Months

Kenya diaspora remittances hit a record $641.5 million (Sh64.3 billion) between January and March, 2018. This is party attributed to the impact of growing investment products targeting Kenyans abroad.
The inflows in the first three months of the year represent an increase of 48.29 per cent from the $432.6 million (Sh43.4 billion) received in the same period last year.
“The improved performance reflects increased uptake of financial products by the diaspora and new partnerships between commercial banks and international money remittance providers,” Central Bank of Kenya says in weekly market note.
In 2015, diaspora inflows edged out tea exports and tourism proceeds to be become Kenya's largest foreign exchange earner. This has driven local commercial banks to roll out investment products such as mortgages targeting the diaspora community.
“We already offer 360 degree services from buying, building, getting approvals, selling and managing of land to offer value and convenience to our customers,” KCB head of diaspora banking Vincent Aberi said last month when the lender camped in Australia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“Remittances have played quite a significant part in strengthening of the shilling in 2018 because they are the top foreign exchange earner and cumulatively contributed more than two per cent of Kenya’s real GDP (gross domestic product) in 2017,” Genghis Capital senior research analyst Churchill Ogutu said on Monday.

138 Years: Is This Kenyan Granny from Kericho the World's Oldest Person?

Sarah Chepkurui Maina, a granny from Kericho county could be the oldest person in the world if what her family says is anything to go by.
The family of Chepkurui, who lives in Ainamoi constituency in Kericho, says she's 138 years now, having been born in 1880.
Her oldest format ID indicates that she was born in 1920, but her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have disputed that, since her oldest daughter is 92-years-old. Her eldest daughter's ID card indicates she was born in 1926.
“My mother wakes up at around 7 am every morning and only takes a cup of tea for breakfast. She takes her dinner at 3 pm, which mostly consists of milk and ugali and retires to bed at 6 pm. We at times request her that she stay with someone such as having one of her grandchildren live with her but she says no, saying she prefers to stay alone,” Marsoi told Kenya News Agency.
Although she has lost her sight, Sarah has strong sense of hearing and she can recognize her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with their voices.
“Strangers have to be accompanied by family members when they want to visit my cucu whose hearing is still intact. Her children knock at her door and when she asks who is outside, she uses her hearing to recognize who among her many children or among her family members in the four generations is at the door before she can open it,” her granddaughter Brianna Chepkoech, 23, told KNA.
Violet Brown from Jamaica, who passed away in September 2017 has been documented as the world's oldest person aged 117. She currently holds the record of world’s oldest woman noted in the Guinness Book of World Records.
