'It is Hell Here,' Kenyan-Born Nurse Working in the US Says over Covid-19

A Kenyan-born nurse living and working in the US has spoken about the challenges health workers are facing in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
Dorothy Ogega, a geriatric nurse based in Indianapolis, Indiana, shared her experience during a video interview with Citizen TV’s Jeff Koinange on Wednesday night.
Dorothy, who works an 18-hour shift, said she is constantly exposed to the virus on a daily basis and her worst fear is contracting the illness and transmitting it to her children.
"Yeah, it is hell here. It has been very challenging since we had our first case and I am very scared. Being a Kenyan and a nurse here, I am very scared,” said Dorothy.
"At the moment we have 60,000 patients and 807 deaths [in the US]. Being a geriatric, I work with the elderly and they are the most vulnerable. Their immune system is not able to contend with the virus," she added.
To make the matter worse, she said the US is running out of essential equipment including face masks and gowns and ventilators. "…We are running out of supplies and we are struggling. The US was not ready for this," the mother of three boys notes.
"My boys are grown enough so they understand but again, I am their mommy to them so I have to assure them. I have to take off my clothes in the garage, leave them there. It is not an easy thing to do.”
"Please my fellow Kenyans, let us heed to the social distancing because this virus is there," Dorothy pleads.

Prayers Won't Help Kenya in the Coronavirus Pandemic, US-Based Lawyer Makau Mutua Tells Uhuru

US-based Kenyan lawyer Prof. Makau Mutua has rubbished President Kenyatta’s decision to declare Saturday, March 21st a national day for prayer over the coronavirus pandemic.
On Tuesday, Uhuru announced the prayer event will be led by a team of religious leaders at State House, Nairobi and urged Kenyans to pray for the nation as it confronts the illness.
“We cannot ignore the need to turn to God.  In these circumstances as we have done in the past as a nation, we have always turned to God first to give thanks for the many blessings that He has bestowed on our nation,” Uhuru said.
“But we also turn to God to share our fears, our apprehensions, but also to seek his guidance and ever-present protection. We acknowledge always that we are nothing without our God.”
Reacting to Kenyatta’s announcement through Twitter, Prof. Mutua said prayers will not solve the crisis, saying Kenya should turn to science and stop what he termed as superstition.
“Prayers won’t help Kenya combat the coronavirus pandemic. Let’s stop this superstition and return to science. This primordialism and naïveté could wipe us off the face of the map,” Mutua wrote.
The Health Ministry on Wednesday said three more Covid-19 cases were confirmed, bringing the total number of infections to seven.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the cases were confirmed at the National Influenza Centre and Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) laboratories.
The three include a couple who arrived in the country from Madrid, Spain via Dubai on March 5th and a Burundian national who traveled from Dubai and arrived on Tuesday, March 17th.
CS Kagwe indicated that the Burundian citizen was picked out during routine screening at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Kenyan Woman Who wasArrested at Her Son’s School inMassachusetts Appeals for Helpwith Legal Fees [VIDEO]

Kenyan Woman Who was Arrested at Her Son’s School in Massachusetts Appeals for Help with Legal Fees [VIDEO]

A US-based Kenyan woman who recorded herself being arrested by police in Acton, Massachusetts as she tried to get to her son from school is suing the school district for false incarceration.
Liz Gathoni, a mother of three, says she was arrested on January 9, 2020 after pleading with a police officer to let her see her son who she claims was being taken to the hospital by force.
She was arrested for ‘disturbing peace’ after she insisted on seeing and talking o her eight-year-old son.
Gathoni is now appealing for funds from well-wishers to enable her to sue the school after her son was allegedly bullied at the school.
Below is Gathoni’s story:
“Who am I? (Liz Gathoni), a black single mother of 3 sweet boys age 17,11 & 8. attending public schools in Acton, Massachusetts. I moved to Acton so my children could achieve a good education in a quiet and safe environment.
I was falsely arrested and incarcerated after being called to my 8-year-old child’s elementary school on January 9, 2020. Although called to meet my son, they wouldn’t let me see him. My son was forcibly sent to a nearby hospital emergency room, where he stayed for 29 hours, separated from me and the rest of his family.
The back story is the school had failed over the course of several months to stop the bullying of my child, and then made a series of further damage to my son. I am raising money to pay legal fees and costs for legal representation as soon as possible.
There are numerous issues that need to be handled, and am facing the continuing challenge of facing off against an affluent town, and it’s regional school district, each with its own separate law firms, and all the resources of each of those municipal governments at their command, we need your support! Please contribute if you can! Whatever you can contribute will help My family, and we will greatly appreciate it.
We are securing rights for our children to be educated in a safe environment free of emotional and physical harm. And to protect our family from further harm and to gain a measure of justice to help the healing process.
We also hope to deter similar rights violations in our school system as we join with other parents and citizens to improve our school and community.
Although my two elementary school children have currently made a safe transfer to another school in the same district, the school district and town have taken preemptive measures time to avoid accountability, and they are potentially going to harm us more as they aggressively seek to defend their misconduct. "

If you have a legitimate case, you do not need to be out there raising money from public. You can secure legal help pro bono (on a contingency basis). I see this as a misuse of Kenyan's generosity. So, if you sue and win, will you refund people's money? Seeking attention!
Sokora slow down and do mea Favor. Find out Who or Where the Father of the kids is.

Most civil cases like this do not need money upfront if the lawyers feel they can win. She needs to get a lawyer who agrees gets paid after winning the case
This woman is Insane; very INSANE. No wonder she is SINGLE. Huh! She should have simply followed the AMBULANCE or whoever to the Hospital (instead of unnecessary Tantrums). Kichwa maji kabisa.
Anyway: Ukijua inchi ya Marekani si ya Mama yako: Nyamaza; Nyenyekea. UNLESS: Wewe kichwa yako ni Mbaya, Wazimu, au Mlevi.
Guest you are a certified idiot. How does her being single come in here? or is being single a crime? Taka taka wewe ,corona virus wewe.
@benson - over 3/4 of Kenyan women who arrived in America married, are now single. They have replaced men with social welfare.
They are now raising kids alone while the men of the house have been pushed out of the families.
Don’t chastise @others for asking a legitimate question regarding the whereabouts of the male parent in this case.
This woman did not have the kids alone, but now she is quick to tell us that she needs help because she is single mother.
It would be helpful to have a male figure around to be a role model to the three boys, hopefully the father who aired them.
The lack of the father in the house could be the reason why the boys are acting up; to include at the school!
Most silly response @Akinyi. What if the boys' father is dead? I do not know anyone who walks into a relationship wanting to be single, especially a single mother of 3 black boys in America. At times we do our best with what life deals us. We moved from a 3rd world country to a developed nation. As such, we face the pressures of developed nations, which include high divorce rates. In your thinking: if the father was around, this would have stopped cops from arresting her or the school from taking the kid to Emergency?
Obama was raised by a single mother, NEVER forget that.
So if your kid misbehaves in school, they go to emergency? Not detention or calling you.

Just share this video with local news. I am sure there are good civil action lawyers that could provide pro Borno services. School districts are has a hard fight. Good luck

I would do the same if l were Gathoni. Confirm my child is breathing before being forced into an ambulance. As a black son, chances of being lied to ati .....oh your son was already dead when he arrived at the hospital. Kumbe they killed him to harvest his organs.
Did you watch the video? You can hear the boy calling for his mom.
Now cops and teachers are trying to kill our kids for their organs without any knowledge of their health history and status.
Hmm, I bet you also believe God is punishing us by unleashing Coronavirus.

Stop abusing Harambee spirit. Call Black lives matters to come and demonstrate. Look for a lawyer who will do it for free or get a percentage of our compensation.

She needs the support. @Sokora; I doubt you have kids in the US, more so black sons. Please, stop with the nonsense.
This lady is standing up for her kids.
@seneca - You can stand up for kids but you have a responsibility to teach them discipline so they can grow up to be quality members of the society!
You don’t know what actually led into the entire episode to a point the police had to be called in.
And yes you can stand up with her but remember this may have been an on going problem with this child because of other issues at home.
The fact that the father is not around at home could be part of the larger problem.
So how is your supposed long term half baked solution relevant in this emergency? So a father would have stopped cops being called. If it was an ongoing issue, why didn't they have a protocol on the boy by now? And why are you well-brought up Kenyans with fathers (from a rabidly thieving country) not addressing the fact that the boy was being bullied? Is racism such a novel thing to you beggars and ass kissers? Similarly, you too do not know what happened; HOWEVER, it is NOT normal to call cops on an 8 year old boy!!! An 8 year old boy...they have already started the jail path for him...a black son! Voetsek! How many 8 year old white boys have cops called on them? If trained men and women cannot handle an 8 year old, then we have problems. Some of you enjoy the rights of people like Gathoni, and are quick to throw stones at them with your third world mindsets.
@seneca - you sound like a demon possessed busket case. Stop arguing the obvious like you know everything.
The more you carry on with this topic, the more foolish you prove to be. How did you get to America being so stupid??
You are even insulting your home country without knowing it, and worse of, the good people of Kenya. Do you really have to sink that low in your mental faculties?.
Kenyans are not thieving people! Yes, there are some general issues we can all talk about Kenya, but for goodness sake, stop insulting the hard working and honest Kenyans.
You just sound like a bitter divorcee that is now leaking the deep wounds inflicted by your ex-spouse ( man or woman).
Kenya is a country of thieves and numbskulls living on loans, their children saddled with loans before birth. I am proudly Kenyan-American. Currently live and vote American, and a Minority American at that. As a minority, my duty is to stand up for what and how we should be treated. That includes Gathoni and her kids. I can guarantee that upstairs, you "Tesi" have a bankrupt 3rd world mentality. If you are in the US of A, think like you are. If deported, well, sorry.

Got no issues with her hustle, I just want to know who are this "we" she's talking about??
"We also hope to deter similar rights violations in our school system as we join with other parents and citizens to improve... "
She turn around and looks, she's alone but goes on " tuko wengi!" referring to her friends in her head.

Good luck in your case. We need to evaluate the Harambee spirit. I will contribute if there is any death in the family, medical appeals. I will not contribute for the second or third pre-weddings. I have observed some couples in my church having pre wedding fundraisers right after a divorce. The last couple had grown up children. Stop abusing people.

Aii what if it was your son/daughter that was being hit by Gathoni's kid, you cannot hit other kids and probably this was not the first time. I would want to hear the whole story from both sides before coming to a conclusion of who was in the wrong. Regardless dont file a lawsuit if you do not have money. There are more worthy emergencies that I would rather donate to.

10x,you mean it's true Corona virus is only catching white people? I saw a post on Twitter a South African white guy saying it's the black ancestors who are fighting back the injustices they got from white people

Some of you Kenyans are shamelessly jealous and pitifully ignorant. Why are you always the first ones to help foreigners destroy your own? If you do not want to support her, stay out of it. Stop with your small group home minds. That such civil cases will get free representation if a lawyer "feels" they can win? Where? There are many winnable cases that no one is paying attention to, especially minorities. It is women like her that bring changes to the USA. They had no business traumatising that boy like that. None. She should write to NAACP and try for a lawyer.
Thank you so much Seneca. It is people like this woman who bring changes in the world and its on their shoulders that we stand on everyday. High five🙌🏾. What they did to this boy, very sad.
@seneca - you seem to jump into defending a kid because of his blackness even without knowing the facts. What would you have said if the black buy had been hit by a white kid?
You are enabling bad behavior by using racism in supporting a rouge kid. Do you have school age kids? And what would be your response if one of your black kids is hit by this black boy? Black on black crime which is ok?
You have also concluded that a kid hitting other kids in school is alright with you. You probably make a terrible mother/father, whoever your gender is, for just being ignorant to the way the school system works in America.
You have also said that peer pressure and society needs makes you divorce your spouse in the developed world. Nothing could be further from the truth regarding that silly statement.

When did mothers/parents lose a right to see their children? You go crazy over your children, that's what you do as a parent. Not all the stupid, clueless b.s some folks have commented here! We live in strange times and people will go to any lengths to put you down and drive you insane. Kwanza Gathoni was more calm than I would've been. That is police harassment! And that worthless school principal should be fired.
And the keep her son away for over 24 hours...what kind of horror is this? So the kid is hitting others and goes to Emergency? To do what? To put him down like a dog? What happened to detention? These people are terrorizing that kid coz he is black.
The kid has emotional and psychological issues if he is hitting other kids in school.
That kind of erratic behavior must be stop to make sure he does not become a threat to other kids. He sounds to be bullying others and that is not acceptable in any school worldwide.
You keep talking about black, black, black kid being terrorized. You are beginning to sound very stupid if you think a black kid should not be restrained when he is hitting other kids.
What kind of community do you do you come from in Kenya where such a negative behavior will be tolerated? Get the foolish blinders off your face and start to see and think in more structured way.
Ok. Aunty Jemima wife of Uncle Tom. I think that you are the text book example of a "Miseducated negro". You are here demanding a back door because "Massa" did not provide one. Yes, it is PURELY RACIST what they (school district) did. Yes, a white kid would not face that horror of being carted away at the age of 8 by cops. They have traumatized that kid. How do you know the kid has psychological issues? Because??? I happen to know about healthcare and the law. Even if the kid was 'psycho', they still should have allowed his guardian access. Next, since this kid has been psycho as you have determined with bias, the school should have a protocol of handling him by now. In short, you have no idea what you talk about. I live in the USA. I live by USA laws. Where I came from, I left it behind. Kenya is third world, US is developed. Please, think like you are developed. Children have rights. Lastly, may karma visit you with this nonsense so that you can grasp why we need to support her.
@seneca - I will not argue with a damn fool! You think you know everything - medicine, law, psychology, except that you don’t know what you are talking about! It is very unfortunate for you to be illiterate from within yourself!
@Teri - Oh you forgot she is the queen of marriage, birthing children, peer pressures, divorce, and life as a single mother thereafter! Yes, she knows everything but want to censor those who challenge her crazy view point about everything she assumes she knows.
@senech - who cares that “you live in the USA”? Do you have to piss on all those people who live elsewhere in the world?
Your kind of folks are the ones pushing Trump to deport you for be stupid and an excessive dummy! What medicine do you know about?
Now you have become a doctor of Wiping pupu on old people in a Nursing facility to make a living as a CNA!? You don’t even qualify to hand over Asprin to a puppy next door. Go figure!
This is an American story in my state of Massachusetts, where we are doing the census in July. Why is a deportee reading it?
