The Kiambu County administration has banned commercial sex workers from conducting their operations during the daytime, arguing that doing so encourages immorality in the society.
This comes after Kiambu Liquor Licensing Board officials discovered that commercial sex workers were openly running their businesses on the streets as early as 9am.
Speaking to bar operators in a series of public participation meetings in Thika, Juja and Kiambu, the officials listed Thika and Ruiru as the most affected towns.
Kiambu County Chief of Staff Gibson Mburu, who was representing Governor Ferdinand Waititu, and Director of Liquor Licensing Board Geoffrey Kaara said bar owners who open their businesses during morning hours were contributing to the vice.
The authorities warned that bar operators found opening their joints during morning hours will have their licenses revoked.
The officials said cases of school children being lured into the trade had been reported. Deputy Director of Kiambu Liquor Licensing Board, Sophinga wa Bibiana said two primary school girls aged between 13 and 15 were recently busted in Thika. The two are said to be pupils from Kigumo area in Murang'a.
The official also said that they had established that a brothel had been opened outside a business college in Ruiru allegedly to recruit students into prostitution.
During the meetings, bar operators agreed to adhere to regulations contained in the Kiambu Alcoholic Drinks Control Act 2018, which they had earlier opposed.
